Hot Date

Lessons learned this week: never run in trenches, always lose yourself in wooded areas, beware of scalding in the factory, don't get too attached to your noggin, and be careful what you say to the pug.

Trench Run by Transhuman Design

Trench Run

A local (for now) multiplayer battle game in which the Grim Reaper has taken a well-deserved break. You're not immortal in this chunky demo from the team behind Soldat and King Arthur's Gold, but you can't exactly do much good as a pile of sodden meat crawling on the floor. A health pack will bring you right back to life, however, making the one-hit kills in this delightful shoot-'em-up easier to bear.

Pick from several classes, including the measured, long-range sniper, and the athletic and very stabby commando unit. Play with three other people, with bots or (in the full game) online, across a bunch of exquisite pixel diaramas.

A Box Full of Joy by Daniil Ermakov

A Box Full of Joy

'Joy' is not a word I'd use to describe this hallucinatory adventure, although I do enjoy games that give me a dedicated backstep action, particularly when it's completely and delightfully pointless. You'll backstep (and frontstep, if you prefer, you weirdo) around a series of warped locations anchored to a bloody apartment and a freaky bar. You'll likely have no idea what's going on, at any point, in this stylish and slightly trying-too-hard-to-be-Lynchian game, but there's lots of funny and disturbing imagery to bear witness to along the way.

Places by ktch

Places

Places is a “series of 3D paintings featuring small and atmospheric places where one can walk around and spend a couple of minutes”, and I love this idea so very much. Be in a place and absorb the environment for a few moments—as a window into another universe, as a respite from the incessant information overload of the net. Three Places exist so far, variants of the peaceful wooded areas we should all make time to visit now and again. (Via NeoGAF)

Hot Date by George Batchelor

Hot Date

You're on a date with a pug in this brilliant little conversation game, which gives you a vast range of oft-hilarious things to utter. Your companion will reply with humorous barks of their own, and I chuckled to myself plenty before the text window suddenly vanished and I had to quit. Still: this is exactly as great as you'd imagine a pug dating game to be. (I love the dog's bored little expression.)

The Factory by Mighty CheBo

The Factory

Even though Twine is way easier to use, I do like a good text adventure built in a bespoke engine—they generally come with their own interesting quirks. Freeware choose-your-own-adventure The Factory is...set in a factory, which randomly selects from different scenes as you click and choose your way towards the end point. You pick a goal before you begin—for instance, 'find companionship', or 'get rich'—and then you fumble your way through the adventure, trying your best to achieve your life's ambition. I managed to do this fairly easily both times I played, though environmental dangers like busted pipes did their best to hinder my progress. This is a well-written game with sparse but effective pixel art, and a wonderfully minimalist, Amiga-y interface.
